Milorganite FAQ's

What is Milorganite?
An organic nitrogen fertilizer composed primarily of heat dried microbes. It is a byproduct of
Milwaukee’s water treatment process.

What is Milorganite used for?
Milorgantie is an all-purpose fertilizer used on lawns, shrubs, trees, flowers, vegetables, and golf courses.

When can Milorganite be applied?
Milorganite can be applied any time during the growing season and it is suitable for any climate.

Does Milorganite need to be watered in to work?
No. It is not necessary to water in Milorganite for it to work. Morganite does not contain any soluble salts (which can burn turf) but relies on natural microbes

in the soil to break down nutrients. Watering in Milorganite will ensure that the fertilizer achieves soil contact earlier and speed up the fertilizing process, but it is not necessary.

Is Milorganite safe for children and pets?
Yes. Children and pets can safely go onto areas that have been fertilized with Milorganite. Milorganite meets the most stringent criteria imposed on any fertilizer product for health, safety and environmental concerns.

What is the difference between organic and regular fertilizer?
Nutrients in true organic fertilizers are “stored” in complex organic molecules until soil microorganism’s break them down and “release” the nutrients for plant use. Regular synthetic fertilizers are chemical-based and need to be watered in.

Does Milorganite contain Heavy Metals?
All fertilizers, both organic and synthetic, contain some heavy metals.

In fact, plants need some heavy metals, such as zinc, copper and molybdenum, for normal, healthy growth. Milorganite meets the Environmental Protection Agency’s Exceptional Quality criteria, a distinction not all organic or biosolid fertilizers

can claim.

Can Milorganite be used for my vegetable garden?
Yes. Milorganite is an excellent and safe fertilizer for all plants that grow outdoors, including vegetables and other edible crops. Milorganite is practically goof-proof since it won’t burn plants – even is it is over applied.

Can Milorganite be applied in the summer?
Yes. Milorganite does not contain any salts so it can be used during the summer. It will not burn plant leaves.

Can Milorganite be applied to my wet lawn?
Yes.  Milorganite does not contain any salts so it can be used on a wet lawn and will not burn plant leaves.

Is it true that Milorganite will keep deer away?
This is information published in the common press and on web sites that state that Milorganite is a deer repellent. Milorganite is not registered with the US EPA as a deer repellent and cannot be sold as one.

Can Milorganite be used in combination with other fertilizers
(and pesticides)?

Yes. Milorganite can be used as a complete lawn fertility program or with other products as part of your program. When you use Milorganite as part of an overall program, do not over apply nitrogen fertilizer. You should be applying, depending on your location and grass type, one pound of nitrogen per application, three to six times a year.

What does the 6-2-0 on the bag mean?
The 6-2-0 guaranties that Milorganite contains at least 6% Nitrogen, 2% Phosphorous and 0% Potassium by weight.

What if pets eat Millorganite?
Milorganite meets the strictest health and safety regulations imposed on any fertilizer product and won’t seriously harm and animal. We do recommend, however, that unused Milorganite be stored away from children and pets as it may give them an upset stomach if ingested.

Does Milorganite kill weeds?
No. Milorganite is strictly a fertilizer.

Does Milorganite contain grass seed?
No. Milorganite is strictly a fertilizer. You can mix grass seed with Milorganite to bulk up seed to make it easier to spread.
