"Using Primer before you Paint"
Primer is used to seal in stains and to provide a consistent surface that enhances the bond between the finish paint and the surface. It is the final and most critical step of preparation. All bare wood (both new and stripped) must be primed. Water-stained areas, and those that had wallpaper, must also be primed.
For most pointing jobs, a good-quality interior primer is sufficient. Primer is available in water and oil based formulas. Some stains, such as dark colored wood stains, or large water marks will bleed through normal primer. For these stains, use a shellac-based primer. This primer will seal any stain.

An excellent general-purpose stain killer, Bulls Eye WATER-BASE blocks solvent-base stains to prevent them from bleeding through the topcoat. It can also be tinted, eliminating the need for a second coat of finish paint.
