"Spring Planting Tips"

 

Finally… Winter is giving way for Spring and we can start to think about gardening again. In Michigan it’s best to begin planting after the ground has started to dry out and can easily be worked. Another good rule of thumb is – It’s safe to start planting when the farmers begin planting their Sweet Corn.

Caladiums are spectacular in shade to partly shaded areas. Plant 2-in. deep and 4-in. Caladiums are bred for their unusual foliage to and make a great “Color Spot” in the great container plants.

Calla Lilies offer intense bloom color and unique foliage to any part shade to sunny garden. Plant 4-in. deep and 4-in. apart. Each bulb produces multiple blooms. Callas also make great container plants.

 

Dahlias are an excellent choice for a sunny garden location. Dig a 6-in. deep hole and plant the top of the root level with the surrounding soil. Fertilize regularly when in bloom to maximize your bouquets.

 

Freesia offer a rainbow of color and fragrance to a sunny border. Plant 1-in. deep and 2-in. apart.  Freesias make an ideal container plant also. When in bloom, don’t forget to “Stop and Smell the Freesias”

 

Gladiolus perform best in a full sun location. Plant the corms 4-in. deep and 4-in. – 6-in. apart. For a succession of bloom, plant a new row every 14 days. Glads are heavy water users when actively growing.

 

Ixia like a hot sunny spot for best performance. Plant 2-in. deep and 2-in. apart. This South African native will repeat bloom when fertilized regularly. Water when rainfall is inadequate. Great in containers too.

 

Liatris is a long-lived perennial. plant 2-in. deep and 4-in. apart, then sit back and enjoy. Liatris will perform best if fertilized when in bloom. Liatris also multiply and can be shared with your favorite gardener.

 

Asiatic Lilies are a low maintenance perennial for your sunny border. Plant 4-in. deep and 6-in. apart, best viewed in groups. Lilies will benefit from an occasional fertilizer application.
