"What you should know
about Carbon Monoxide Detectors."
- Carbon Monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning
in America
- Last Year, about 250 people in the United States died from CO poisoning
- Fall and winter are the times when CO poisoning most often occurs because of increased use of furnaces and fireplaces and decreased ventilation due to cold weather
- Without a CO Detector, you won’t know it’s there. You can’t smell it. You can’t see it. You can’t taste it
- Since CO is not heavier than or lighter than air, it doesn’t accumulate near the floor or ceiling, so CO Detectors can be mounted anywhere. It should be close enough to bedrooms to awaken sleepers when the alarm sounds
- The burning of fossil fuels – gas, oil, coal and wood produces CO in furnaces, boilers, water heaters, engines, barbecue grills, stoves and fireplaces
- Smoke detectors do NOT work as CO Detectors
- Consumers should avoid CO Detectors that are not UL listed. Look for the UL label on the package
- Most experts agree that CO Detectors five years old or more
should be replaced.
