MERV

(Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value)

is a commonly used rating system for filters, describing their ability to capture several ranges of particle sizes from the air that passes through the filter. MERV is based on a laboratory test and is not representative of how a filter will actually perform in a home. The test overstates the effectiveness of electrostatic filters. MERV can help you compare filters, but if should not be the sole basis for evaluating

a filter.

The 3M MPR (Microparticle Performance Rating)

goes beyond MERV by focusing on a filter’s ability to capture particle between 0.3 and 1 micron in size.

MPR can be used to compare filters, however as a MERV, MPR cannot predict how a filter will actually perform in your home and overstates the effectiveness of electrostatic filters.
